Qatar Airways Cargo, the world’s third largest cargo carrier transported more than 100 horses from Amsterdam to Doha for the annual CHI AL SHAQAB event held in Doha, Qatar from 2 – 4 March. The much-awaited equestrian event consists of three days of Jumping, Dressage, and Para-Dressage, where the best national and international horses and riders battle for one of the most coveted titles in the equestrian calendar. The horses were transported back to Amsterdam with utmost care on board the carrier’s B777 freighters.

Each horse is treated with the utmost care and attention and our customers can count on us for the safe and reliable transportation of their thoroughbreds

CHI AL SHAQAB is the first equestrian competition of its kind in the Middle East and Asia to be sanctioned by the FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale or International Equestrian Federation) and one of only four CHI equestrian events in the world. In equestrian sports, CHI (“Concours Hippique International” or International Equestrian Competition) is a prestigious title, one not easily attained. Organisers of major equestrian events covet this title and riders participating at CHI events compete fiercely to win.

“We pride ourselves in providing the highest standard of service for our equine guests, on the ground and in the air. The team handling live animals is thoroughly trained and work in accordance with IATA’s Live Animal Regulations to provide the most comfortable journey for the horses. Each horse is treated with the utmost care and attention and our customers can count on us for the safe and reliable transportation of their thoroughbreds,” said Qatar Airways’ Chief Officer Cargo, Mr. Ulrich Ogiermann.

With a modern fleet of Boeing 777, Airbus A330 and Boeing 747 freighters offering temperature-controlled zones, a network of more than 150 destinations, comfortable and spacious horse stalls and seats for grooms on board the freighters, the QR Live service guarantees the care, comfort and safety of its equine guests. On the ground, at its state-of-art hub in Doha, Qatar Airways Cargo’s Live Animal Facility offers an equally sophisticated environment with air conditioned holding stalls, a paddock and on-site veterinary personnel. In 2016-17, Qatar Airways Cargo transported over 2300 horses, a 10% per cent increase over 2015-16.

Qatar Airways Cargo was voted “Global Cargo Airline of the Year” during Air Cargo Africa, the continent’s biennial air freight industry trade exhibition and conference held last month.
